MALAYBALAY CITY (BukidnonNews.net/ 04 June 2025)—Three high school students from Bukidnon topped the heat round of this year’s Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad. 

The heat round, an online preliminary competition at a national level, was held on May 18. Medalists will proceed to the international final round, which draws both on-site and online participants. 

Ten out of the province’s 17 awardees were from Central Mindanao University Laboratory High School in Musuan, Maramag. 

The gold medalists were Tzidkenu Nadela and John Matthew Panis of CMULHS and Cedric Light Perez of Valencia National High School. 

Participants were given 90 minutes to answer 25 questions (scored 4 points each) from five main topics. These are logical thinking; arithmetic (for kindergarten and primary) or algebra (for secondary students); number theory; geometry; and combinatorics.

Gold medals were given to those who scored 80 and above; silver for  60 and above; bronze for 40 and above. A merit award was also given to those earned 20 and above.

Final global round

The final global round is scheduled on August 22-25.

Last year, the Philippines topped the medal tally with 29 gold, 26 silver, 29 bronze, and 33 merit awards. Six students got the perfect score. Other online participants were from Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka.
