Despite missing classes, Roel Manlangit did not give up his studies

VALENCIA CITY (Bukidnon News/03 June) Pilipinas Got Talent Season 4 winner Roel Manlangit has been dropped from class three times as a Grade 4 pupil of Valencia City Central School here but he managed to pass the exams arranged by teachers just to keep him in school.

Margie Bayagna, VCCS principal, said Manlangit got not only talent but also brains.

“He is an intelligent kid. The problem is just his absences because he had to go to different places to perform,” she added.

Manlangit won the much-coveted P2-million prized Pilipinas Got Talent Season 4 Sunday after he performed Bamboo’s “Noypi.” He got the highest number of text and online votes.

Aleth Silao, Roel’s homeroom teacher previously offered him P20 a day as reward for attending classes. But Bayagna said, it did not work as Roel earned higher from his performances.

Bayagna said Roel saw his gigs as a way to solve his family’s poverty.

She added that during the stretch of time that Roel had to be absent, the school made an arrangement with him.

She said if he can pass the periodic exams despite absences, they will allow him to finish Grade 4.

Bayagna said Manlangit managed to squeeze time from his busy schedule to take the exams.

“(His average is) 82 percent. He is qualified to proceed to Grade 5,” she added.

Silao is one of Manlangit’s avid fans. She hung tarpaulins using her own resources to show support for the pupil. She also campaigned for people to vote for Manlangit. The teachers of VCCS also sent messages voting for Manlangit.

Even the Department of Education regional director asked staff to vote for Manlangit being “the pride of Bukidnon and of Mindanao.”

Bayagna cited that about 18,000 people working in DepEd supported Manangit.

The VCCS faculty, staff, and students are preparing a grand welcome for Manlangit if he returns to the school. (Daniel V. Mental/
