Sensory-based therapy pushed for kids with special needs

VALENCIA CITY ( 10 March 2020)—When teaching kids with special needs,  sensory-based equipment such as slides, gym balls, trampoline, swings and Snoezelen lights can enhance student participation.  

Thus said Dr. Michael P. Sy, registered occupational therapist and educator from the University of the Philippines-Manila, in a seminar-workshop on School Readiness and Transition for Children with Special Needs, held Feb. 24.

Sensory Integration Based Therapy (SIBT) promotes repetitive visual, tactile, auditory and taste sensations to improve learning and performance.

Sy told parents and teachers that there is no menu for therapy services. “Each child has its own special needs and may need one or more professionals to work out the process,” he said.

He urged parents to be part of the solution as they have the most significant role in the therapy. The development of a child, he said, could be achieved by interdependence of home, school, community, and peers.

Educators and administrators were also advised to design relevant Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

The author of “FAMILY 101+: Raising Children with Special Needs in Modern-Day Philippines” also tackled issues concerning development of adolescents with special needs, early interventions, family and child-centered strategies, and Persons with Disability rights in the country.

Camille Sabijon, a Special Education teacher from Valencia City Central School (VCCS), said the workshop “provided an avenue on how teachers, professionals, and parents can develop an understanding on our learners…”

The activity held at the CAP Building was sponsored by the city government of Valencia through the Mayor’s Office. Personnel from the City Social Welfare and Development Office also participated.
