MALAYBALAY CITY (Dec. 15) – An Igorot woman-farmer bagged the top prize in a competition on producing best quality cabbage during the 1st IMTASULA (Impasugong, Talakag, Sumilao and Lantapan) Vegetable Derby and Festival in Brgy, Miarayon, Talakag, Bukidnon.

Beatriz Homonlay, from Sumilao, Bukidnon, bested all other contestants in the season-long competitions, which started as early as July 2020. Homonlay belongs to a group of Igorot farmers who migrated and are now residents of the province.

She received a trophy and a certificate from Mindanao Development Authority Sec. Emmanuel "Manny" Piñol as 2020 Cabbage Queen during the event’s culmination program on Dec. 12.

The Local Government Unit of Sumilao, in its social media account, revealed that Homonlay also received a refrigerator from an executive of a cold chain firm.

Homonlay partnered with an agricultural firm in the seed used as well as the farming technology with the assistance of farm technicians.

The first-ever Mindanao vegetable derby was an initiative of MinDA to improve productivity, address poverty and help accelerate the region's economic recovery. (Mel B. Madera)
