CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (BukidnonNews.Net/11 February 2020) Advocates pushed for citizens in communities to be critical thinkers against disinformation in a two-day seminar workshop here on media and information literacy.

Ms. Ann Lourdes C. Lopez, director of the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC) research, policy and advocacy unit said the first step to achieve complete democracy is to educate people in the community about media and information literacy.

“We help them access high-quality information, we help them become better news fact checker, and we help them become a legitimate contributor of firsthand information”, she added.

Ma. Imelda E. Samson, AIJC vice president said AIJC and Xavier University organized the seminar workshop to help MIL practitioners create a module for teaching media literacy to different schools and communities in general.

She added that the training was meant to magnify their media literacy campaign, help MIL teachers become champions for news literacy and the communities deal with disinformation.

Organizers cited that citizens should have the competence they need to become better verifier, independent and accountable news producers in the future.

Participants, mostly MIL teachers from various public and private schools in Northern Mindanao, attended the two-day News Literacy Training at a hotel here on February 6 to 7.

Ms. Rowena C. Paraan, Head of the Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo of ABS-CBN, underscored the importance of news literacy, adding it is one requirement for people in communities.

“Our people should be taught to become critical thinkers about the information they received to avert further misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information dissemination,” she added.

XU Development Communication Prof. Rechelle Ann Tolinero-Barraquias also shared about her experience attending a fellowship program in the United States focused on media and information literacy.

The training series is part of the Developing Champion Teachers in News Literacy project of AIJC with Google News Initiative, Love Frankie, and the University of Hong Kong.  (Vergel R. Dolosa/ Bukidnon State University B.A. in English Language intern at BukidnonNews.Net
