AGENT OF CHANGE: To a mother of all times
MALAYBALAY CITY (29 June 2020) I honor Dr. Lourdes G. dela Torre as a mentor, a mother and a friend.
I knew her because she was a family friend and I used to hop in her classroom at the then Bukidnon State University – Secondary School Laboratory just anytime of the day to use her desktop computer.
She was my mentor in editing my write ups and even on inputs on day to day life. One of my best memories with Dr. L was when she founded the “Quick Reaction Team for Abused Women and Children of Malaybalay City.” This was the time, 1999, when many cases of abuses were recorded in the City. We used to join the Philippine National Police (PNP) Task Force in conducting surprised visits among Pub houses, etc. and helped the Local Social Welfare and Development Office facilitate concerns among women and children.
When she left the college for another institution, our communication never stopped. She did not forget to include me in whatever activities she used to be engaged with. When she would hear my stories, all she would calmly say was “If you are no longer happy in what you are doing or where you are now, move out. Do not hurt yourself. You are talented.”
The last time we’ve talked was in March 2020 on our way to a mall in Valencia City. She said. “Maglaag with Apo to enjoy life” (to go around with grandchildren, to enjoy life).
I didn’t know that was our last conversation. I didn’t even know she was sick.
You are gone forever, Dr. L, but you will truly be remembered of your words of wisdom, your interest in the protection of our environment, women and their children. You are a friend, a mentor, a mother of all time. I am truly blessed to be part of your life’s journey. Rest in Peace now with our Creator.
