30,000 rice farmers to receive P5K cash aid
MALAYBALAY CITY (BukidnonNews.net/ 09 April 2020)—A cash subsidy of Php 5,000 will be given to 30,000 rice farmers in the region hit by the coronavirus crisis, said an official of the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Region 10.
Carlota Madriaga, DA-10 Regional Technical Director for Operations, said they have already started handing out financial assistance to the first batch of 15,000 farmers and that they are preparing for the second batch.
In a virtual press conference of the Regional Task Force for COVID-19, she said rice farmers should ensure they are listed at the Registry System of Basic Sectors in Agriculture.
They coordinated with local government units to identify farmers who till one hectare or less. The list is submitted to the DA, which then subjected it for validation.
Those qualified for the subsidy were given cash cards that they can use to withdraw their aid at the LandBank ATMs. About 600,000 farmers in the country will receive aid.
Madriaga said that they prioritized the rice farmers as they were affected by the Rice Tariffication Law. Agriculture Secretary William Dar said in March that rice farmers in the country lost a total of Php 3.3 billion in revenues after the law caused more influx of imported rice.
Madriaga also said farmers regardless of produce can avail of loan programs at the LandBank of the Philippines (LBP). She said the loans, payable in eight years, will only have 2 percent interest.
