PACE OF PEACE: DepEd-10’s mass training for senior high teachers

By Lourdes G. dela Torre, Ph.D

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (BukidnonNews.Net/26 May) The preparedness of the Department of Education to proceed with the Senior High School as part of the implementation of K to 12 curriculum is evident in Region 10 through the Mass Training of Teachers (MTOT) that started on May 20 and will culminate on June 10, 2016.

It provides the teachers with opportunity to enhance their competence to face the first batch of students who are beneficiaries of the Senior High School instruction.

Those opposed to K to 12 curriculum implementation argued that the country, specifically, DepEd is not ready to implement.  So these critics want to postpone the implementation.

However, DepEd Region 10 can prove that it is ready to implement the K to 12 curriculum within the time frame to respond to the need to put the senior high school students in their proper level of education.

This will also put the country’s educational system at par with other countries in the ASEAN region.

The Mass Training of Teachers (MTOT) consist of over a thousand educators from the Divisions of Bukidnon, Camiguin, Gingoog City, Lanao del Norte, Malaybalay City, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Oroquieta, Ozamis,  Tangub, and Valencia City.  These teachers came from different academic disciplines and technical-vocational competencies, which is the first and necessary preparation in the implementation.

While the critics argued that there is a lack of necessary resources for the implementation, the Regional Director (RD) of DepEd 10, Dr. Allan  G. Farnazo, proceeded with the MTOT. He did this despite meagre resources but with great determination.

He believes that the final implementation of the curriculum through the SHS should start on time this School Year – 2016 – 2017.  The new SHS teachers who are being trained in the first batch of MTOT support Farnazo’s determination to proceed with the SHS curriculum implementation.

The on-going MTOT at Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS) is a venue of convergence of educators who come from various educational institutions who joined the teaching force of DEpEd.  It poses challenge to the tertiary level teachers to join the SHS because they find this an opportunity to contribute to the formation of 21st century youth whose competence and character enable them to be global citizens.

Region 10 rises to the challenge.  DepEd 10 has the strong will and determination to succeed.  Being the first region of DEpEd to start the MTOT, it is able to make the teachers equipped with knowledge, skills and attitude needed in the successful K to 12 implementation.

It is able to unify experts from various disciplines, technical professionals and teachers into a common mission of delivering the most effective and relevant educational services to the first batch of senior high school students that will prepare them for the globalized world.

The MTOT is not just a mind-breaking initiative.  It has also exposed the teachers to socialization where both physical and mental exercises are promoted.  Light moments such as social and cultural programs were held to showcase the participants’ talents and skills.  It is the great chance for intellectual exchange of participants, thus, establishing a network of professionals in the region.
