LIFE IN THE PLATEAU: ‘Year-ender’ and the year of the ‘end of the world’

MALAYBALAY CITY (Bukidnon News.Net/31 December) This is about the crazy little thing called year-enders.  As early as September, I already thought of what to write, who to ask, and how to get it. I was supposed to revisit the stories that drew much traffic in our Facebook account and in our humble website. I was supposed to do this and that.

But all these were washed out by a series of ‘journalistic untoward incidents’ with our coverage of ‘Pablo’ among them.

As a small community news organization operating with a shoestring budget, we have tried to hurdle the test of surviving a year in operation.

After starting the dispatch in February 2011 and officially launching it in September 2011, we have also launched our official website in September 2012.  Newspapers and radio stations in and out of Bukidnon are in our mail list. It also includes key officials and personalities in different sectors in the province.

Our goal of reporting timely, accurate, and comprehensive stories is one for the long haul.  Despite the constraints, we managed to file an average of 8 to 10 stories a week.

Over-all, it was a year we have survived. To be able to put together the editorial team’s year-ender could have been a bonus.

But not all our desires materialize. Maybe some things are left for next year.

Here, instead is my pick, a journalist’s take, of headlines for some of 2012’s noteworthy stories arranged chronologically.

But I prefer to call this list, a review.
