MALAYBALAY CITY (Bukidnon News/ 03 December)— About 3,000 students from Bukidnon State University initiated a massive relief goods collection for the survivors of  Super Typhoon Yolanda in Visayas.

Dubbed “Usa Ka Basong Bugas Para sa Visayas,” the relief effort was done by students of the university’s National Service Training Program (NSTP).

The students were divided into groups to do house-to-house visits around the city to ask for donations. They covered the communities such as Barangay 1, Kubayan, Kalasungay and Azura.

Other students trooped in front of the university’s main gate to ask donations from the passing motorists. Their placards say, “Inyong gamay nga hinabang dakong tabang para sa Visayas.”

Jerome Ramirez, NSTP coordinator, said the activity started from November 18 to 23. Other NSTP teachers also monitored the students for their one-day house-to-house on November 22.

Students enrolled in the three NSTP courses—Literacy Training Service (LTS), Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS) and Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC)— and about 300 volunteers from BSU’s National Service Reserve Corps – College Disaster Management Unit (NSRC-CDMU), joined in the massive relief.

James Ryan Awitan, a first year DevCom student enrolled in an NSTP class, shared: “…It’s our first time to go in the community and ask for some donations. While bonding with them (classmates), we are also helping those Yolanda survivors in Tacloban.”

According to Rhondell Paraiso, CDMU coordinator and NSTP teacher, the activity  is packed with good intentions of students who joined not because they are required to.

In the end, the group had collected a total of 153 sacks of assorted goods, 60 boxes of food items and medicines, 46 sacks of rice and Php 56, 000.00 cash.

NSTP teacher Saluma Jumawid  said the goods were already delivered to the ABS-CBN Regional Network station in Cagayan de Oro last Wednesday to be sent in Visayas.

Other relief efforts done by the youth include that of the Malaybalay Ultimate Frisbee Association (MUFA) which had earlier sent their relief goods collection. (Iyren A. Dalipe/ Bukidnon News)
