The barangay held a meeting participated by all Barangay 2 internet café operators as well as the school representatives and parents, Wednesday afternoon.

Marbie S. Binahon, Punong Barangay of Brgy.2 sees the need of intervention among students, especially minors, internet operators, teachers and the parents of how computer gaming are addictive which hinders the learning education of students especially the  minors..

It gained positive feedbacks from the parents and the teachers since most often, computer gaming becomes a factor for students to cut classes and much worse even lie just to get money from their parents.

However, internet operators also justified saying that they only allow students to their shops, after school hours.

It was then resolved that BPSO from Brgy 2 will conduct a random visit to all internet cafés located within the university belt so that those who are caught in internet shops with students (High school and elementary) during school hours will be given a citation.

“This is a good avenue for students to change their lifestyles and use internet shops for good gain and not just for gaming” Ron Neri, one of the internet operators said in favor of the new ordinance.

He added, “Our shop is purposely for research only to avoid students from browsing games.”

Binahon added that those minors have different curfew hours in the internet shops after school hours and they should be out by 9pm so that internet owners will not be held responsible for them.

He added that it is also the parent’s responsibility to keep their children at home after classes or before the curfew hours.

A representative from the teachers said that doing internet research should be an exemption to the ordinance.

All sectors agreed that they will allow students/minors in the internet shops during school hours only if they can present a pass note signed by the adviser.

Internet shop owners who violates any of the provision of ordinance #12-14 shall be punished by a fine of Two Thousand Pesos (P2,000), or an imprisonment of two months and one day to six months or both at the discretion of the court.

Mrs. Naneth Micayabas strongly believed that by doing this initiative, student will become more active in school and they will depart from vices and from bad influence of their friends.

Binahon is positive that other barangays will also adopt the ordinance so that no student will be hindered from his education due to improper use of computer and technology. (Contributed to Bukidnon News.Net by Iyren Ardines Dalipe/BSU intern)
