Biz leader cites media’s role in better business, good governance

MALAYBALAY CITY (Bukidnon News/23 September) It’s very critical to have a news media community that follows the business community’s struggle for good business policies as part of good governance, Roderico Bioco, president of the newly-formed Bukidnon Kaamulan Chamber of Commerce and Industry said.

“It helps in promotion of better business policies and investments in the province,” he added.

Bioco spoke during the 1st anniversary of Bukidnon’s local news service Bukidnon News Dispatch recently. The group also launched its official website: www.bukidnonnews.net.

He cited that the media and the business community must work in partnership but admitted that it should be a critical collaboration stressing the need for “high ethical standards” in the pursuit of community journalism.

Bioco cited the local news service’s role in disseminating news and information on Bukidnon via online means as making it easier for people to follow development especially if they are outside the province.

He stressed that ethical journalism will benefit the community and urged Bukidnon News to sustain its work and to “continue to work on the side of the truth.”

Bioco, president of the Mindanao Grains Processing Inc, cited his experience in working with the news media, which he said helped them (business community) deal easily with the rest of the community.

Dr. Lourdes G. dela Torre, one of the trustees at Bukidnon News, said in her opening remarks that as a group founded by committed young professionals, the news service aspires to generate news and views from the community that contribute to economic development, political maturity, and the community-building of cultural diverse peoples.

She said the content provided by the news service run on a shoe-string budget features events and issues that happened locally but with international implications (Bukidnon News).
