‘Special day,’ not holiday as Valencia celebrates San Agustin fiesta

VALENCIA CITY (Bukidnon News/28 August) The Parish of San Agustin has led the celebration today of the parochial fiesta in honor of patron San Agustin with a high mass led by Bishops Jose Cabantan of Malaybalay and Jose Manguiran of Dipolog.

Hundreds attended the high mass at the San Agustin Church even if the City
Government of Valencia did not declare a non-working holiday in the “City of the Golden Harvest.”

Mayor Leandro Jose Catarata, who led a civic parade Monday, declared a “special day” in the city in honor of the patron saint. But it’s work as usual in the public sector in the city.

Catarata left it to the private sector how they will treat the feast in his memorandum circular dated August 17.  DXDB AM radio reported Tuesday morning that many desks in different offices at City Hall were empty.

Marvin Selecios, city administrator, told Bukidnon News Monday, the city government recognized that the fiesta is an event run by the parish so the city government placed itself in the sideline.

“But we are there to provide support,” he added. He cited that a big bulk of their support is in providing logistics support for augmentation forces of the police to secure the fiesta activities.

A mix of sports and entertainment events, including a Fiesta Fun Run on Aug. 25, marked the fiesta celebration.  One of the bands featured in the nightly shows is the Manila-based 143 Band.

But those who were able to monitor the schedule of activities noted that some of the activities, like the amateur singing contest and the motocross competition were not pursued.

Prayers for peace and progress of the city were among those petitioned in the prayers of the faithful after Manguiran gave his homily (see related story).

Another petition was to pray for the youth to share their gifts and for parents to become good models to their children.

Devotees led a parochial procession, which includes a statue of San Agustin, in the downtown area was held around 6a.m. On feast day, three masses were scheduled to be said held in the church including the high mass presided by the bishops. (With reports from Ching Cascuera/Bukidnon News)
