BSU’s social science dept. holds fun run, tree planting

MALAYBALAY CITY – The Bukidnon State University (BSU) Social Science Department held a fun run and a tree planting activity on August 27 as part of its celebration of the Social Science Week.

More than 2,500 students, faculty and residents of Malaybalay joined two categories in the fun run, which started at 6a.m. in BSU campus along Fortich Street.

The three-kilometer run route passed through T. Guingona Street, San Isidro Street, Lope Damasco Street, S.H. Kisolon-Lumbo Road, passing Mamala bridge and Berian Church, and ended in Barangay Casisang Covered Court.

The five-kilometer run, on the other hand, followed the same route, except that from Casisang Covered Court it continued to Sayre Highway, passing Rubbertex, and back to Casisang Covered Court .

About 50 faculty members and student representatives participated in the tree planting at Natid-asan of Barangay Casisang after the run. About 300 Mahogany feeds were planted.Also at the tree planting were Casisang, Malaybalay City Barangay Captain Jacinto Tadlas and Forester Felix Mirasol of the Community Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO). The 300 Mahogany seedlings were provided by CENRO.

Ms. Jenny Mangubat, member of the BSU faculty and one of the organizers, said what the activity was in line with the mandate of President Benigno S. Aquino III to develop a National Greening Program.

Executive Order (EO) No. 23, series 2011 mandated the Department of Agriculture (DA)- Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR)- Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Convergence Initiative to develop a National Greening Program in cooperation with the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Budget and Management (DBM), private sector and other concerned agencies and institutions.

Mangubat said the fun run and tree planting activity is just the beginning of a series of activities related to NGP.

She added that assigned student organizations of BSU will visit the seedlings monthly and CENRO will also continue to monitor development. (Hazel Generalao)
