Slain Valencia councilman: “I love challenges …. I love being the last one in the line”

25 January GinoVALENCIA CITY (Bukidnon News.Net/25 January) “I love challenges … I love being the last one in the line,” slain 26-year old Valencia City Brgy. Poblacion councilman Gino Antonio Zambrano is how he  described himself in his Facebook account.

Zambrano, an active youth leader of the local Catholic church who started as an altar boy and was former Sangguniang Kabataan chair of the barangay, added in his Cebuano description that he is “kind, loving, responsible, and above all good …good in looking after problems not mine.”

He was gunned down noon on January 22, Tuesday near their residence.

The slain barangay kagawad finished Bachelor of Laws at Bukidnon State University. He took the Bar examinations in October 2012.

He was driving home in his multi cab vehicle from a committee hearing at the barangay hall when unidentified assailants shot him five times. He was hit in the head, chest, and back. The Laviña General Hospital declared him dead on arrival.

Burial of his remains is scheduled afternoon on January 27, Sunday, at the Valencia City Public Cemetery in Purok 4, Poblacion.

His death was met with expression of loss, condemnation and search for justice in the social media with others using a graphic with his photo and print “Justice for Gino” as profile picture.

“Your spark will always be remembered, brother! Rest in Peace,” wrote GA, one of his friends on FB.

The graphic said he was killed by “masked assailants who jumped on the back of the cab and shot him.”

Senator Ralph Rector who admitted that Zambrano was his political aide in northern Mindanao in his last campaign condemned the killing.

“I strongly condemn the senseless killing of a young man whose only fault was dedicating his life toward serving his community,” Recto said in a press release posted on the Senate website.

He then urged the Philippine National Police to enforce the gun ban not only in Metro Manila but also in the provinces to get rid of loose firearms.

Police are still exhausting different angles on the motive behind the killing, investigators told reporters this week.

His constituents in the barangay and in the city Valencia poured sympathy to the Zambranos in his wake at their residence.
He was serving his second term as barangay kagawad. He chaired the bids and awards, education, and ways and means committees of the barangay.

The undivided Brgy. Poblacion Valencia City is Bukidnon’s biggest barangay in terms of population.

In 2008, its population was 29,737 – almost as big as Baungon town and bigger than the number of residents in four Bukidnon towns.

The urban barangay, subject to several attempts to be subdivided into smaller barangays in the past, has more residents than those of the municipalities of Malitbog (21,948), Sumilao (21,720), Dangcagan (21, 254) and Damulog (21, 183), according to the 2007 Population Census (Popcen).
