LGUs, pet owners told: Be responsible, comply with anti-rabies law

MALAYBALAY CITY  (BukidnonNews.Net/17 March) The provincial Veterinary Office of Bukidnon urged pet owners and the local government units to be more responsible and serious in implementing the rabies prevention and control program or Republic Act 9482 of 2007.

Dr. Ma. Teresa B. Roa, chief of the Department of Agriculture-10 integrated laboratory made the call during the Rabies Awarenes Seminar on March 9, 2016 at the Gardens, Malaybalay City. She said citizens should submit their pets for immunization.

She made the call to LGUs down to the barangay level. She said the program goal of a rabies–free community in 2020 could only be possible if the local government units, especially the barangay government and the pet owners will seriously work in partnership with the line-agencies in eliminating rabies in the region.

According to reports, Region 10 ranked fifth with 6.40% ratio in human cases nationwide, next to the National Capital Region with 9.92%, Region IV-A with 11.16%, Region 1 with14.46%, and Region III with 25.62%.

Roa added that it is an ambitious goal to be free from rabies with the increase of animal bites cases from 263,000 in 2010 to 683,302 in 2014. Rabies-free records were set by the provinces of Camiguin in 2003 and 2012 and Siargao in 2014.

She said achieving this goal for Bukidnon is still possible.

Roa stressed that this program is a multi-sectoral collaboration with the DA, Department of Health, Department of Education, and the Department of Interior and Local Government. She added that it requires 100% compliance by the LGU and Intensified implementation in the barangay level.

She said however that the role of the community being responsible pet owners in very crucial is in regulating, controlling and eliminating rabies.

She stressed their battle cry that goes, “walang masamang aso sa Matinong Amo” (No bad pets with sensible pet owners). (BukidnonNews.Net)
